The “Hypno” part of Hypnobirthing is just one of the elements of this wonderful course; the focus is on helping women to achieve a calm, relaxed state during labour and birth. We give women many tools to be able to achieve this through:
• massage
• breathing techniques
• scents and sounds
• affirmations and self-hypnosis
What makes Hypnobirthing unique is the use of self-hypnosis to eliminate any fear or anxieties you may feel regarding your pregnancy, birth or parenthood and replace it with a total confidence at a deeply subconscious level, in your bodies innate ability to nurture, care for, and to birth your baby naturally and joyfully.
We use hypnosis to maintain a positive, calm and relaxed state during birth. Far from the images conjured up of charlatans with swinging watches; self-hypnosis is, at its core, a form of deep meditation. It is about mindfulness. It is a state of intense focus, in which you are still fully aware of your surroundings but where you choose to block out those things that don’t help you achieve your goals; – exactly what is required during birth! This state of focus, calm and confidence can reduce the need for unnecessary intervention or pain relief.
Hypnosis works on the premise of what you perceive to be real is real. If you believe that birth will be awful and painful, then it probably will be for you. If you believe that your birth will be a beautiful, joyous and calm experience for you and your baby, you are much more likely to achieve this.
Our bodies are amazing, not only can they grow our beautiful babies but our bodies also instinctively know how to birth our babies. For the vast majority of women we are able to do this with little or no medical interventions. However there are times that medical intervention is necessary for the safety of the mother or baby, and that is a time to be appreciative of expert medical support. Indigo Gentle Beginnings equips you with skills to remain calm and centred no matter what turn your birthing journey takes.
Our education classes emphasise the very important role the birth partner plays in birth. They equip the partner, as well as the mother, with knowledge and trust about the process, so that the partner can remain a calm and supportive advocate for the mother and baby. Working together to bring your baby into the world is an experience that will change and deepen your relationship, and create a beautiful beginning for your family.
