FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Does using hypnosis mean I will not be conscious of my birth experience?

TELL ME MORE

You will absolutely be conscious and aware throughout the labour and birth. In fact you are in a state of being hyper aware and alert. Using self-hypnosis skills simply means you are in a deeply relaxed or a meditative like state, you are fully aware of everything that is going on around you, but you can choose to not engage with outside stimuli. This allows you to remain focused and deep within yourself so you can concentrate on your body and your baby, and this is how we birth our babies calmly and comfortably.

Is it necessary for my partner to attend classes?

TELL ME MORE

The role a partner plays in pregnancy, preparing for and during labour and birth is of great importance. By attending classes together it means you are absolutely on the same page of how you wish your birth to be and ways that you can achieve this. During birth, partners can help you remain focused and calm; using the skills we have learnt. Use massage/acupressure and other techniques to help you remain more comfortable. And most importantly feel knowledgeable and confident enough to advocate for you and your wishes during the birth. Couples often say that having a Hypnobirth meant they felt they really worked together as a team to bring their baby into the world and that it has bought them closer and deepened their relationship as they have a new level of love and respect for each other. In saying all this, if you need or want to attend classes without a partner, we welcome you with open arms. I also hold Mother Only Classes, to cater for this. The skills you will learn, and the confidence you will gain will be invaluable. And remember, you are never alone; you and your baby are the perfect team and together can have the perfect birth.

When should we attend classes?

TELL ME MORE

The best time is between 20-30 weeks. This allows plenty of time to practice and become fully comfortable with what you have learnt. However you can attend anytime. If you would like to attend before 20 weeks pregnancy, this can be a wonderful opportunity to dispel any fears of birth early on, allowing you to relax and enjoy your pregnancy, it also allows you extra time start practicing these great skills. Or if it is very late in your pregnancy, the skills you learn can help you gain a complete confidence in your body, one you may have been lacking throughout pregnancy, as you head into you journey to birth your baby.

Is Hypnobirthing only about having a natural birth?

TELL ME MORE

Absolutely not! Although we teach woman that for the vast majority of us, birth is a completely normal, natural, healthy part of a woman’s life, and that for most of us we need no outside intervention to give birth. However there are times that medical intervention is necessary for the safety of the mother or her baby, and for that we are truly grateful that we have access to wonderful medical care. During our classes we will learn about what we can do if there is a change of plans, and how to still be actively involved in your birth. Hypnobirthing gives us the skills to remain calm and centred no matter what turn our birthing journey takes, and for it still to be a wonderful, beautiful and positive experience.

Is Hypnobirth only for first time mothers?

TELL ME MORE

Hypnobirthing is for everyone! Often woman who have had a previous birth experience that has left them deeply scared of giving birth again benefit the most, as they can release all of these fears and regain confidence in their bodies, they often report their Hypnobirth to be a deeply healing experience. So whether it is you 1st or 5th baby or a VBAC. Whether your pregnancy has been uncomplicated or had some special circumstances. Whether you are choosing a home or hospital birth. Midwife or obstetric care, everyone can benefit from the wonderful, relaxed state of mind hypnobirthing gives us to birth our babies.

Should I attend hospital antenatal classes as well?

TELL ME MORE

This is completely your decision. Hypnobirthing Australia TM is a comprehensive course in childbirth education. Many hospital antenatal classes cover a lot of information about interventions and medical procedures during birth, which can be beneficial in making informed decisions should you need to. In Hypnobirthing classes we concentrate more on the fact that pregnancy, labour and birth is a natural and normal state and what to expect in these times, and ways to remain focused and relaxed in each phase. You can choose to attend just Hypnobirthing classes or hospital classes as well, either way you will be prepared for your birthing day.

Does Hypnobirthing really work?

TELL ME MORE

There have been some studies done on hypnobirthing which show wonderful results. It has shown that among woman using Hypnobirth techniques there has been a reduction in use of pain medications, reductions in interventions needed and more satisfaction with the birth experience. One trial of woman using hypnobirthing have described their feelings of hypnosis in labour as: a sense of relief and consolation, self-confidence, satisfaction, lack of suffering labour pain, changing the feeling of pain into one of pressure, a decrease in fear of natural childbirth, lack of tiredness, and lack of anxiety. They expressed increased concentration on the uterus and cervical muscle, awareness of all stages of labour, and having “positive” thoughts. Births were perceived as being very satisfactory compared to their previous experiences.

Recommendations

As soon as I enter Emma’s beautiful massage studio I instantly relax. Emma is a very intuitive therapist and always seems to find all the spots that I need worked on. Her massages are the perfect combination of deep tissue to ease that muscular tension whilst still leaving me feeling so relaxed!

If you are thinking about doing a birthing class, I’d love to personally recommend the Hypnobirthing Class I did a couple of weeks ago in Beechworth.

Emma is extremely knowledgable and passionate about teaching woman to have trust in their bodies and be confident in their ability to birth their babies.

If you are feeling anxious about the journey ahead of you, Emma helps take that ‘fear’ away and makes you feel confident, teaching you about how your body works during labour and techniques to help you focus so you can prepare yourself for what will be one of the greatest achievements of your life- bringing your baby into this world

I admit I was quite reluctant at first to come to Emma’s classes- it all sounded a bit weird. But it wasn’t at all! I gained so much knowledge of what happens during the birth. I was so worried about seeing my wife in pain, but the classes taught me how normal and natural birth is and to trust the process. It also taught me lots of different ways that I can support my wife during her labour. It has showed me that the role I play is so important in the birth of our baby. I really enjoyed the classes and am so happy I went along.

Congratulations to my beautiful, caring friend Emma Matthews for expanding her massage business to include birthing classes to expecting mothers, a true passion of Em’s. Each and every mum who comes in contact with you is so blessed! x
